Monroe Products (The Monroe Institute) pursued a collaboration with Byron to release THE SHAMAN’S HEART “with Hemi-Sync” to deepen the immersive and transcendent qualities of this masterful shamanic recording. This CD features the entire, original recording of THE SHAMAN’S HEART (Byron Metcalf with guest artist Steve Roach) and combines Hemi-Sync technology embedded within the tracks. Within the opening moments of FEVER DREAMS' first track "Wicked Dream" (featuring Patrick O'Hearn on bass), it is clear that a new chapter is opening on Steve Roach's long and winding pursuit of potent soundworlds far off the traveled path. The music's foundation is built upon long mid-tempo hybrid grooves with strong bass elements created from a combination of acoustic and electronic means. Following The Serpent's Lair (Projekt Records, 2000), the critically acclaimed collaboration with award winning recording artist and sonic innovator Steve Roach, NOT WITHOUT RISK is Byron Metcalf's second solo release.

Byron's ability to combine his unique proficiency as a drummer/percussionist with his background as a psychologist and shamanic practitioner has been attracting fans and fellow voyagers worldwide since his 1998 debut release of Helpers, Guides & Allies. Byron's music is being used in a wide spectrum of contexts including experiential shamanism and journey work, various meditation practices, breathwork, trance dance, bodywork and other healing arts.

Beginning as a collaboration between Roach and Metcalf, the music on THE SERPENT'S LAIR evolved over the past year into an epic 2-CD set, augmented with a myriad of guests. For those familiar with Roach's work, this release has it all. Steve's ultra-soundworlds, hybrid grooves and magical production combined with Byron's acoustic-organic tribal trance patterns set Disc One in motion (in all directions). Aligning with themes of shamanic initiation found throughout the world, this disc is rooted in the organic... the earth... the ancestors... and the initiatory energy of focused transformational ritual practice which is integrated into the alchemical fire of psycho-spiritual death and rebirth. It is here that one is confronted with all the essential elements of danger and possibility.

Disc Two - subtitled "Offerings From The Underworld" - is built around musical elements from disc one, yet forges a sonic alchemy as it dives deeper. Though at times rhythmic, the overall feeling is a floating, pulsing, breathing adventure through a system of underground rivers and caves, inspiring fantastic episodes along the way.

For over 40,000 years shamanic societies throughout the world have used various musical strategies to achieve altered states of consciousness. These states, which are believed to be essential components to most of their sacred rituals and ceremonies, offer infinite varieties of inner landscapes which the shaman must navigate in order to retrieve insight and wisdom, and bring healing to the community. Drums and percussion, played in a continuous, driving manner are the basic instruments used for these purposes. With this in mind, Helpers, Guides & Allies...was inspired by Byron's passionate interest and involvement in the healing potential of non-ordinary (altered states) of consciousness.
